Pension Credit

If your retirement income is very low, you might be able to apply for a State pension top-up called Pension Credit. Pension Credit is useful because it helps unlock many other benefits, for example: 

  • Free TV licence (for over-75s) 
  • NHS dental care and check ups 
  • Free sight tests, vouchers, glasses and contact lenses 
  • Travel costs to and from hospital 
  • Cold weather payments 
  • Help towards housing and Council Tax benefit. 


Pension Credit is means-tested, but you may be eligible even if you have a personal pension, savings or you own your home, so it’s worth checking.
